        What's ICE MOUNTAIN?

        ICE MOUNTAIN is a band for VOCALOID Hiyama Kiyoteru (氷山キヨテル).
        The band name, ICE MOUNTAIN, is derived from the literal English translation of his family name, Hiyama (氷山) which uses the kanji for ice and mountain.

        Vocaloid 2 Era

        Vocaloid 2 VocaloSensei Hiyama Kiyoteru

        Hiyama Kiyoteru was released for the VOCALOID 2 on December 4th, 2009 by AH Software. Conceptualized as an elementary school teacher who sings with a band called ICE MOUNTAIN on the weekends, this opened up many opportunities to imagine the type of double life he might lead between his career and singing in a band.

        In addition to his backstory of being a teacher and a vocalist in a band, AH Software releases some official art with implications of Kiyoteru having an alternate personality...
        Fans begin to curate this new persona as being associated with his band.

        ボカロPLUS Era

        In August 2011, Tokuma Shoten (with cooperation from AH Software) released a supplemental book featuring newly created characters representing his bandmates.
        This book was released physically in limited quantities in 2011, but also saw an digital release as an e-book by Tsutaya e-books. A new website called kiyoteruhiyama.com was created to promote this spinoff.        This book was considered somewhat lost media upon the dissolution of kiyoteruhiyama.com, but is now archived on internet archive.

        In VocaloPlus Vol. 0, there were several bios for the band members: Hiyama Kiyoteru (Vocals), Hiyama Akito (Guitar), Hokaze Natsuki (Drums), Azuchi Tohma (Bass) and Amane Haruto (Keyboard).In VocaloPlus Vol. 1, there is some additional information on the band.There were 3 short stories and manga pages included in VocaloPlus Vol. 2, seen below.

        There is also information in VocaloPlus Vol. 3 (yet to be scanned in, I apologize) along with the winning entries for the illustration contest.In VocaloPlus Vol. 5, a teaser was released for a spinoff featuring the backstories of Azuchi Tohma and Amane Haruto in their high school days. This manga was serialized in Monthly Comic Ryu. I am seeking the volumes of Monthly Comic Ryu (2012 June Issue and 2012 July Issue) if anyone can find them.

        #アイスマ～ここに君がいないなら～

        In February 2012, Tokuma Shoten released a novel by the name of #Aisuma~If You're Not Here. This novel has the same characters as the ones introduced in VocaloPlus, but completely changes the appearance, backstories, and bios of all of them including major things like birthdays; Kiyoteru egregiously has his birthday set as January 31st despite both VocaloPlus and AHS considering his birthday to be his original release date of December 4th.Because this is my page and I get to do what I want, I want to say I have major beef with this novel because Yasuda Suzuhito drew all of them extremely ugly. Just look at Kiyoteru on the cover. Look at how they massacred my boy. That is not my sweet baby boy Hiyama Kiyoteru.The content of the novel itself is fine though, the story is relatively basic and though I can't read it in its entirety because I can't read Japanese, I at least understand the main story beats.

        Vocaloid 4 Era

        Vocaloid 2 VocaloSensei Hiyama Kiyoteru

        In 2015, AH Software releases an updated version of Hiyama Kiyoteru for the VOCALOID 4 engine. With this release, they split him into 2 separate voicebanks: Natural and Rock. His rock design resembles the "Teru" persona from the ICE MOUNTAIN bios in VocaloPlus. This, in a way, canonizes his rocker persona established by VocaloPlus.

        Of particular interest is his new band logo, featuring a stylized mountain made up of the letter A and M in a circle. This is from the Japanese rendering of his band name, アイスマウンテン (aisu maunten).
        This logo is featured prominently on his headphones of his Natural design and as a small detail on the microphone of his Rock design.
        This logo would also appear on merchandise from this era onwards.

        Synth V 2 Era

        In 2025, AH Software launched Hiyama Kiyoteru for the newest software Synthesizer V 2. His new design utilizes his new logo. This release comes with 7 different vocal modes. His design features a techwear style jacket with stylized argyl (a motif he gained in his V4 Natural design) and his circle band logo on the arm. The inner sleeve of the physical release also features alternative art of him, representing his rocker persona. This design does not have an assigned voice bank.This alternate design is not included in the release, so you cannot set this art in the editor, unfortunately.

        Since this is my page I think I'm allowed to say things: I think this design sucks. I have to gaslight myself into thinking the design is cute regularly or else I start feeling like a hater. The belts are so stupid dude. The jacket is too big for him. His alternate design covering up his entire chest is a disappointment too like please give me his collarbone and pecs he had in his Teru and Rock designs. Give them back!! My man needs his naturals to breathe!!
        Anyways. Sorry. My page my delusions etc I don't have to be professional here.

        So what's canon?
        Is this even canon?

        Short answer: there really isn't canon!
        The only "canon" and official information is:

        • He is an elementary school teacher

        • His favorite subject is math

        • He is coworkers with Minase Kou

        • He is Kaai Yuki's teacher

        • He has a band called ICE MOUNTAIN which he is the vocalist for

        But these official settings can be ignored.Despite ICE MOUNTAIN as a concept being technically official canon, VocaloPlus settings aren't.
        So who are these other 4 characters with him? Who is Akito, Natsuki, Tohma, and Haruto?
        Where's all this confusion from? Because of sparsely translated information and the complete dissolution of kiyoteruhiyama.com, many English speakers (myself included) thought the band members Hiyama Akito, Hokaze Natsuki, Azuchi Tohma, and Amane Haruto were canon characters made by AH Software. However since purchasing as much of the ICE MOUNTAIN peripheral information as I could, it's become apparent that this is a setting made by the publisher Tokuma Shoten with AH Software's backing and blessing. This means though acknowledged by AHS and promoted by them in the past, they are not officially canon.

        So what now?

        VocaloPlus ICE MOUNTAIN is technically unofficial. However, I fell in love with this particular interpretation of Hiyama Kiyoteru and the original characters representing his band. It achieved its original goal of giving fans more to play around with.I will continue to be ICE MOUNTAIN's biggest fan, no matter what.
        I have made so many friends and I wouldn't be the person I am today if I didn't become extremely brainrotted out by them. From the very bottom of my heart, I hope that even now, 15 years later, that newer generations of VOCALOID fans will continue to enjoy the characters crafted by Tokuma Shoten that I have grown to love so dearly, even if they aren't canon.
